Medium portion of blood oranges. Distinctive dark flesh due to the presence of anthocyanins, polyphenol pigments common to many flowers, but uncommon in citrus fruits. Chrysanthemin is the main compound found. The flesh develops its maroon color when the fruit grows with low temperatures during the night. Blood oranges have a unique raspberry-like flavour. The arancia rossa di Sicilia has Protected Geographical Status. Common varieties; ‘Tarocco’ (Italy), ‘Sanguinello’ & ‘Moro’ (Spain)
